Bath (2ndXI)
A successful partnership between Bath Cricket Club and Somerset Wanderers Ladies Cricket Club (SWLCC) has led to a merger and a thriving women's and girls cricket activity.
SWLCC was founded in November 1969 by Mrs. N. Tranter. Mr. Peter Wight, until his retirement in 1995, became the second longest serving umpire ever to stand in county cricket, and was President for 34 years from the start of the club.
The partnership between the two clubs started in 2001 and gave the nomadic SWLCC a permanent home for senior cricket, together with access to better resources for developing girls cricket. For Bath Cricket Club, the opportunity to add women's and girls cricket to its portfolio was the last piece in the jigsaw with its aspiration to become a leading community cricket club. In October 2003, both club's agreed that the best way forward was to consolidate the partnership by merging the two clubs.
The scale of women's and girls cricket at the club has increased in a short-time to around 12 senior players and 50 youth, with many girls playing at a senior level.
To reflect the historical origins, women's and girls teams now play as 'Bath Wanderers' within Bath Cricket Club. Bath Wanderers 1st XI play in the ECB Premier League South and the ECB National Knock-Out Cup competitions whilst, from 2006, Bath Wanderers 2nd XI will join the Gloucestershire league. Youth teams are run at Under 15 and Under 13 age-groups.
The club is committed to continuing to provide more and better practice and playing opportunities, and to consolidate its already considerable reputation at the leading edge of community cricket development for women and girls.
